What will Happen During the Institute?
Each day of the institute will focus on multiple activities toward these goals:
Mornings will generally be spent observing and participating in teaching of a group of middle school students as well as debriefing the practices as they relate to teacher education.
Afternoons will consist of activities, seminars, panel discussions, and team planning time. We will have many guests join us to share important information as well as provide you with opportunities to consider how high-leverage practices fit into your program.
Finally, you will have the opportunity to participate in three evening events- two STEM field trips and an evening picnic.
- Discuss and examine benefits for strengthening teacher candidates’ knowledge and regular use of high-leverage teaching practices.
- Explore what types of deeper learning are being required of students related to Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.
- Observe and discuss research-based, high-leverage teaching practices common across content areas as well as those that are unique to a discipline.
- Discuss appropriate differentiation strategies for high-leverage practices to meet diverse learning needs.
- Share and discuss various pedagogical models that have potential for both clinical experiences as well as university-based learning time.
- Consider how culturally responsive pedagogy and practice impacts student outcomes.
- Develop plans for strengthening the teaching of high-leverage practices within respective programs.
