Who are the Middle School Students?
The Lane Equity and Achievement Partnership (LEAP) project is collaborating with OSU and OEIB to bring approximately 32 African American middle school students from four school districts in Lane County to a summer program called “OSU Explorations 2014”. The students will be entering grades 6 through 9 in the Fall of 2014. This camp has been designed to provide a critical opportunity for African American students: a culturally comfortable environment to explore STEM-related opportunities, the OSU campus experience and to develop relationships with diverse faculty, student mentors and each other.
The students will travel to Corvallis each day by coach bus and participate in STEM-related activities and field trips on OSU’s main campus and the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Students will also participate in an academic enrichment experience focusing on the Common Core Standards. They will be accompanied by OSU student-mentors from the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) in the College of Engineering. Their four days on campus will encompass fun, enriching experiences designed to make careers in STEM fields a real possibility. Teachers and faculty from around the state will have an opportunity to work with the participants on academic enrichment, while OSU students and staff model career pathways.
The LEAP youth come from diverse family contexts (two/one parent, foster, adoption) and span a range of identities; some self-identify as African American, some as African, some as multi or bi-racial. These students will be learning and growing together as a cohort for the entire 2014-15 school year; OSU Explorations 2014 is their first activity together.
